Poquoson Real Estate Guide

Poquoson is one of the oldest continuously named cities in Virginia, quite a feat in an area that is known to have been settled in 1628 as the English often renamed settlements when they colonized this part of Virginia throughout the 17th century.

Poquoson continues to share some community services with it’s neighboring York County, even though it became an incorporated town in 1952 and an independent city in 1975 thereby establishing itself as a politically independent entity.

The current City of Poquoson, much like many other communities on the peninsula is significantly larger than it was during the early days of that English colonization. The first reference to the city is believed to be when it was opened for settlement in 1628 and was occupied by people who had as part of a land grant. Many of the original settlers had been part of the Virginia Colony known as Kecoughtan established in 1610 by Sir Thomas Gates. Kecoughtan eventually became part of what we know today as Hampton.

The City of Poquoson continues to a vibrant and active community well known for it’s annual Seafood Festival, beautiful marsh land and the marina out at Messick Point. A strong sense of community and pride in it’s history make Poquoson a popular choice for families and those who are looking to be close to the York River.
