Located at the southe-astern end of the Virginia Peninsula, Newport News was incorporated as a town in 1896 and combined with Warwick County in 1958 to become an independent city.

Home of the Norfolk Grumman Shipyard, the military is well represented in the are at Langley-air Force Base, Fort Eustis and further up the Peninsula toward Williamsburg Camp Peary.

The marine terminal can be found at the east end of the city while Newport News/Williamsburg Regional Airport can be found close to the Patrick Henry Mall along with major national retail stores and restaurants toward the center of the peninsula.
